Explosions kill 1, wound dozens in Bangkok

in Society

BANGKOK – At least five grenades exploded Thursday in the center of Bangkok near a massive encampment of anti-government protesters, killing one person and wounding at least 50, sending panicked people running through the streets and fleeing an elevated train station.

The area of the explosions has been the site of a tense standoff between Red Shirt protesters, who are demanding Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resign, and armed troops over the past several days.

More recently, a rival group of protesters has rallied in the area, occasionally hurling stones and insults at the Red Shirts, creating a volatile mix. Several of the blasts were near where the rivals have gathered, under the elevated tracks of a Skytrain station.

Chinese factories eager to hire illegal Vietnamese labor

A large number of illegal Vietnamese workers have found employment in Chinese factories thanks to a labor shortage and unintended side effects of the China's Labor Contract Law, a  Hong Kong newspaper said Friday.

The South China Morning Post quoted workers at a fan making factory in Guangdong’s Foshan City as saying that the Vietnamese usually comprise 10 percent of its 1,000-strong workforce. They are part of a growing but illegal foreign labor force in the Pearl River Delta, mainly from Vietnam and other neighboring countries.

Australian teen completes round-the-world sail

in Society

SYDNEY – A 16-year-old Australian who spent seven months at sea in her pink yacht sailed across the finish line of her round-the-world journey Saturday, becoming the youngest sailor to circle the globe solo, nonstop and unassisted.

Thousands of spectators erupted into cheers as Jessica Watson sailed into Sydney Harbour, the finale to an epic adventure in which she battled 40-foot (12-meter) waves, homesickness and critics who said she'd never make it home alive.

"She said she'd sail around the world, and she has," a tearful Julie Watson said as she watched her grinning daughter cruise past the finish line from a nearby boat. "She's home."

Watson docked at the Sydney's iconic Opera House. The teenager burst into tears and gasped in relief as she stepped off the yacht and into the arms of her parents, whose decision to let their daughter attempt the feat was called an act of insanity by critics.

Man on video sought after NYC car bomb plot fails

NEW YORK – The car bomb was a crude concoction of ordinary items — fireworks, fuel and fertilizer — that authorities suspect was meant to cause maximum mayhem in the heart of Times Square.

In the end, the device fizzled and the city and its residents counted themselves lucky once again: lucky that a vendor saw smoke creeping out of the car parked in one of the busiest streets in America; lucky that authorities responded quickly; and lucky that the would-be terrorists were clumsy enough to assemble a bomb that wasn't capable of exploding.

Nearly 160 people are feared dead after an airliner crashed while landing near the southern Indian city of Mangalore.

Indian officials said there were eight survivors among 160 passengers and six crew on board the Air India Express flight from Dubai.

The Boeing 737 overshot the hilltop runway as it tried to land and burst into flames in a valley beyond.

Indian Aviation Minister Praful Patel said he felt "morally responsible" for the crash, AFP news agency reports.

Survivors said they thought they heard what sounded like a tyre bursting just before the crash.
